Hazardous Waste
Belmont has partnered with the Town of Lexington and surrounding communities to offer periodic collection of household hazardous waste. Collection events are held at the Minuteman Household Hazardous Waste products Regional Facility, within the Hartwell Avenue Composting Facility. To participate, pre-registration is required. Note: Latex paint is a water-based, non-hazardous material and may be put in with household trash when completely dry.
Event Guidelines
Please read and abide by the following guidelines as household hazardous waste collections are highly regulated.
- Have your ID and proof of residency ready when you arrive
- Remain in your vehicle at all times.
- Place all hazardous waste in the trunk of your vehicle (or the bed of a pick-up truck). Items placed in your backseat will not be accepted.
- Containers used to transport waste will not be returned.
- The Minuteman Hazardous Products Facility reserves the right to refuse unidentified materials or unacceptable amounts of hazardous waste.
- REMINDER: Water-based paints will NOT be accepted.
Tips for Transporting Hazardous Waste
- Tighten caps and lids
- Leave materials in original containers
- Pad boxes with newspaper to minimize spills
- Never mix chemicals
- Do not make unnecessary stops
- No smoking

Other Information
Batteries
- The DPW has partnered with Call2Recycle to arrange a drop off box for batteries in the DPW office. More information on recycling batteries.
- Rechargeable batteries (up to 11lbs & under 300 Watt-hours), single use batteries, and cell phones can be dropped at our office on 19 Moore Street.
- Damaged, defective, recalled, and wet-cell (car) will not be accepted. Batteries over 11lbs or over 300 watt-hours (such as those used for e-scooters, e-bikes, power tools) will not be accepted.
Fluorescent Bulbs
- Please bring fluorescent light bulbs and items with mercury to: DPW Office, 19 Moore Street, 2nd Floor
- We cannot accept large quantities (no more than 8) or any bulbs longer than 4 feet. We do not accept broken bulbs
